Antique Oak MacKenzie & Mitchell Wind-Out Table (1870)

Antique Oak MacKenzie & Mitchell Wind-Out Table (1870)

An extra-large Victorian oak topped wind-out table manufactured in Edinburgh by prestige craftsmen MacKenzie & Mitchell in appoximately 1870. The table extends to 12ft by means of a substantial Joseph Fitter telescopic screw mechanism. There are four drop-in leaves allowing the table to be used in several lengths starting at 5ft 3ins. The table top is solid quarter sawn oak with moulded edges and has canted corners. It is 4ft 6in wide. The heavy table framework is all mahogany, the table aprons are veneered oak. The turned fluted legs are in walnut and stand on large ceramic castors. The legs are inset so as not to obstruct sitters knees. We have finished the table by spraying three coats of water based satin varnish.

We specialise in antique wind-out tables and this one is the grandad! When we acquired it about 18 months ago, it had been put to full use. Unlike many wind-out tables, the drop-in leaves had seen as much wear as the rest of the table. Its original varnish was flaking in places and had turned a strange orangey colour. It had more than its fair share of red wine stains and other marks. It has been a labour of love for us, working on it when we had an odd spare moment. We carefully removed all the original finish using cabinet scrapers before careful sanding to produce an even finish. We have tried hard not to obliterate its history.

The amazing mahogany table frame with its carefully machined interlocking sliding sections didn't need much in the way of repair, but we did what was needed and fully serviced it, along with the telescopic mechanism.
