An antique French pine dresser, probably dating to the early 1800s. Ornate colum detail to the top and base. Two doors to the base with a single drawer over. The top cabinet is supported by two elegant turned posts and a pine back. The top has two display doors with original blown glass and is crowned with an elegant cornice. Whilst we can’t be 100% certain as to the age, all the research does point to the early 1800s. We can definitely say it’s French, we even found pieces of very old French newspaper stuck to the bottom of the cupboard. This is a gorgeous antique, hand painted, solid pine dresser. Suitably marked and knocked for its age and history - inside and out - we have tried to show this in the photos.
We painted the dresser in “Cosy” eggshell paint from the Sanctuary range and then waxed with a layer of clear Carnuba wax, before buffing to a soft sheen. The top was completely stripped back to the pine and given several coats of clear wax. We decided not to distress the piece and let it continue to age at its own pace.
The dresser still has the original pivot hinges and the original blown glass which is amazing considering the age of the piece. It has had woodworm during its life, this is long gone but we have given it a full treatment none the less to prevent any future re-infestation. We’re not sure if the escutcheons are original but would say that the keys certainly are. The drawer pulls had to be replaced with something more in keeping with the piece as it arrived with The Fettling Fairies sporting handles that were shiny brass! This is a very rustic dresser and is definitely more of a French country piece than a finely finished antique. We just love it the way it is.
