An antique Joseph Fitter wind-out table with two fixed leaves and a drop-in third leaf. It has four turned mahogany legs with reeding, a mahogany frame and original brass and ceramic castors. We have matched it with a set of 6 antique Victorian balloon back chairs with interesting carved detail to the lower back and Regency style front legs.

This is the best wind-out table we have come across to date. We gave it a thorough service before commencing refinishing. These tables normally have poplar tops that have been stained to look like mahogany when first made. We usually sand them back and varnish to show the poplar. This table was different, at some time in the past it had lost its original poplar centre leaf. Someone had had a replacement made - in mahogany! In order to get an even finish, we decided to stain all the tops a rich mahogany colour and we are delighted with the result. It isn't 'brown' like old faded mahogany, it is a warm reddish colour. There is a quality set of chairs that have been cared for and well used through their life. A long time ago it looks like a skilled blacksmith has made some special brackets to strengthen a few of the chairs - these are quite unobtrusive. Curiously, one of the chairs had been intentionally reduced in height by a couple of inches and heavy duty brackets fitted to reinforce it. Our imaginations have run wild trying to work out the reason! We have made this chair the same height as the others, we think our 'surgery' fits in.

Because we enjoy giving pieces a new identity, after full preparation, we primed, undercoated and then painted the base of the table and chairs in "Aurora" water based acrylic satin. We have reupholstered the chairs using a tapestry fabric called "Red Butterfly"; this has been scotchguard protected. All the paintwork has been waxed using Carnauba for added protection. The table is 119cm long when not extended; a winding handle is of course included.
